This is a great collection of comments! Reading through it has been enlightening on many fronts. In the last company I worked for, I evolved into the engineering manager position, and did the hiring process for each engineer as the company grew from 5, to 23 consultants/engineers. The new hiring process was always such a mixed bag of events - great when you found that diamond applicant, but always sobering when you would advertise a job and get sometimes hundreds of applicants, even during a strong economic period.

I eventually came up with one rule myself: If I couldn't narrow down my preferred candidates list to 3 people for interviews, then it was clear I was either (a) not advertising the position correctly or (b) wasn't too sure of what I was looking for.
